AVG Version 8 Update

June 3rd, 2008

Don’t know if it’s just my computer or AVG has had a fix, as “Active Ports” didn’t get flagged on a clients computer. Unfortunately the only other computer I would like to install “Active Ports”, “Radmin” and “PC Anywhere” has Vista on it and none of them are Vista compatible.

As I’m going to be using more web based remote support in the future, it won’t matter to much about Radmin and PC Anywhere, and the firewall I’m using for Vista, Comodo Firewall Pro has a similar facilities to Active Ports.

AVG Version 8

May 21st, 2008

I’ve been installing the latest version recently as 7.5 won’t be supported for much longer (found out early in June it’s the end of 2008). It does a bit of a Norton, wanted to remove “Active Ports” and screws up the “Alexa Tool Bar” (Had to re-install it), and looking at the History it also removed “Radmin” as well (Maybe I wasn’t paying attention and let it). Fortunately it has PUP (Potentially Unwanted Programs) Exceptions list to exclude them from getting picked up on future scans.

Even the free version does Spyware scans and advises on dodgy websites (Safe Search) when carrying out searches, it will show a green star with a tick Okay against Good search results and a Dodgy next to dodgy web sites, and a site that AVG has reservations about has a Question Mark , and for really dangerous sites this Dangerous. Just note that theses are AVG’s interpretation of the quality of the site’s, and it can be turned off if you don’t like it.

The free version appears very good, for the paid version £29.99 you get a few extra’s, Anti-Rootkit, Safe Downloads, Safe IM and Safe Surf as well as free support. for another £10 you can purchase the Internet Security version which adds Anti-spam and Firewall.

I’ve been a bit wary of the all in one solution for a few years, as they (Norton, Panda, McAfee) just got a bit bloated and caused lots of problems. I believe they have now streamlined there products and they are a lot better.

I don’t have time to review everything all of the time, I only get around to it when I need a new or better solution to a problem.
